With his muscular, straightforward American rock, Nashville artist Will Hoge has garnered frequent comparisons to giants like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty. Backed by a group that featured former Georgia Satellite Dan Baird on guitar, Hoge released his major-label debut, Carousel, in 2000. The effort was recorded at Memphis' vaunted Ardent Studios and engineered by John Hampton (the Replacements, Gin Blossoms).
 
Will Hoge enrolled at Western Kentucky University with the intention of becoming a history teacher and coaching high-school basketball. Nevertheless, he soon began writing songs and playing out. Hoge eventually relocated to Nashville, where he put together a band and started to play gigs. In 1999, the group self-released All Night Long, a blistering, no-nonsense recording of a show at Nashville venue the Exit/In. The album sold more than 4,000 copies, allowing the band to finance several Southeastern tours. Hoge was also generating music-industry heat; Atlantic signed the group and released 2000's studio effort Carousel. Baird played on the album (along with the sturdy rhythm section of Tres Sasser on bass and Kirk Yoquelet on drums), but amicably left soon after due to the group's demanding road schedule. ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide
