311

* 311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer/dj SA Martinez, lead guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and bassist P-Nut.
* After years of consistent touring, 311 have developed a reputation as one of the hardest working, most influential and most entertaining live bands in the U.S. Their live shows have become dynamic celebrations of music and life…and their summer tour has become an annual event for their legions of loyal fans.
* 311 have released eight studio albums (four Gold, one Platinum, one Triple-Platinum), one live album, one greatest hits album (Gold) and three dvd’s (one Gold, two Platinum)
* 311 have sold over 8 million units in the US.
311’s albums in chronological order are: Music, Grassroots, 311, Transistor, Soundsystem, From Chaos, Evolver, Don’t Tread On Me.
* 311 have had 5 albums reach the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Sales Chart.
* 311’s most recent album, “Don’t Tread On Me”, features 11 new songs – including the #1 Modern Rock Radio hit “Don’t Tread On Me”.
* 311 have had 7 singles reach the Top 10 on Billboards’s Modern Rock Chart (including the #1 singles “Down”, “Love Song” & “Don’t Tread On Me”)
* 311’s “Love Song” reached #1 at Modern Rock and Top 10 at Modern AC and Adult Top 40. The song which first appeared on the soundtrack to the movie 50 First Dates (and was later added to 311’s own Greatest Hits album) propelled the soundtrack to Gold certification. Besides contributing “Love Song” to the movie soundtrack, 311’s Nick Hexum produced & recorded 4 other songs for the movie soundtrack – including songs with Seal & Jason Mraz.
* 311 celebrated their 17 year anniversary in the summer of ‘07, with a 50 show tour of ampitheathres coast-to-coast…drawing crowds averaging 10,000 people per night. Including crowds of 14,000+ in Atlanta, Boston, DC, New Jersey, Los Angeles, etc.
* 311 tours have included an impressive array of opening acts on their way up. Bands such as No Doubt, Incubus & Korn all supported 311 on US tours before they too became headliners. Support acts on the past four 311 summer tours have included The Roots, The Wailers, O.A.R. and Matisyahu…making for an amazing musical adventure.
* 311 attributes part of their long-term success to their slow-growth grassroots development. In 1992, the band moved all of their belongings into a storage space and literally lived on the road – touring relentlessly for years and growing a loyal fanbase via word of mouth before ever being embraced by radio or MTV. It was not until a year after their third album was released that the mainstream media was forced to take notice (due to the band’s increasing concert draw) and the band began to climb the sales and radio charts on the success of the song “Down” (which ultimately reached #1).
* Because of their unique sound (mixing rock, hip-hop, reggae & funk), and because they have always maintained a balance of hard rocking songs and melodic mellow gems - the band has developed a rather diverse fanbase….rock fans, jam-band fans, punk fans, hip-hop fans, reggae fans, etc. It makes 311 one of the few bands that can play for such varied audiences. For example, one summer 311 performed on hip-hop’s Temples of Boom Tour (with Cypress Hill & Pharcyde) - and on punk rock’s Warped Tour (with Rancid, Pennywise, etc.) - and on the jam-band Horde Tour (with Blues Traveler, Lenny Kravitz, etc). A musical triatholon.
* 311 opened the door for a lot of late 90’s success stories….bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Sublime, etc. - because 311 was one of the first bands with a hybrid sound to successfully break through to a mainstream audience.
* Despite the brooding attitude of the grunge movement in the early 90’s and the angst of the rap-rock movement in the late 90’s, 311 always stayed true to their own approach and their underlying message of unity and positivity. That message still rings true for them today…as they often end each show by telling the crowd, “Stay Positive and Love Your Life”.
* The band kept this positive attitude throughout a lot of challenges and hardships… The band persevered & succeeded despite coming out of Omaha, Nebraska (which at the time was a musical no-mans land), despite their unique hybrid sound, despite never being embraced by the national press, despite a fire early in their career which destroyed their touring vehicles and all of their equipment, clothes & money, despite a fickle music industry which is not in the business of nurturing career artists, despite the fact that almost all of their early 90’s peers are either disbanded or irrelevant. 311 is a true success story – despite all odds.
* In 2000, 311 purchased a recording studio in North Hollywood - renovated it and named it “The Hive”. The studio was most active in the 70’s / 80’s when Missing Persons and Adam Ant recorded albums there. 311 have recorded their last three albums (“From Chaos”, “Evolver” and “Don’t Tread On Me”) at “The Hive.”
* Each year on March 11th (3-11 Day), 311 holds a special concert event that attracts thousands of 311 fans from around the world to New Orleans, Louisiana. As a result, the Mayor of New Orleans has officially proclaimed March 11th as “3-11 Day” in New Orleans. In 2000, 311 performed a 47 song set that lasted exactly 3 hours and 11 minutes. In 2002, 311 played 59 songs clocking in just shy of four hours. And in 2004, 311 played a five hour marathon set of 68 songs!!
The 2004 show was recorded and was released as a live concert DVD in October of 2004. The DVD is now certified Platinum.
In 2006 3-11 Day was moved to Memphis, TN (due to venue problems in New Orleans caused by Hurrricane Katrina). Tickets to Midsouth Coliseum sold out in 1 day…and were sold to fans in 48 different states!!! In 2008, 3-11 Day will return to New Orleans for a special show at New Orleans Arena.
